Guidelines & Application Form

The Chesshire Lehmann Fund is open to applicants across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. There are 2 funding streams:
  1. Community Action: A grant of up to £3,500 for a community group/not-for-profit organisation
  2. Research: A larger grant of £5,000 for a community group in conjunction with a University, OR for independent University research.
Before making an application to the Chesshire Lehmann Fund, please make sure you are eligible to apply and have read the 2015 funding priorities.

Who can apply for the two streams?

Academic Research -
  • To be eligible to apply, a researcher from an academic institution or the academic institution itself can apply for funding; preference will be given to new post graduates.
  • Applications for retrospective research are not eligible, unless the funding is to be used to write a thoughtful report on previous activity, where the report was not part of the initial funding.
  • An academic institution is an educational institution dedicated to education and research.
  • General research consultancies cannot apply for funding.

Community Action

  • To be eligible to apply, community groups/not-for-profit organisations must have direct engagement with low income households and be active in local communities.
  • The Trustees particularly welcome applications from new community groups, or those that are starting up, provided the focus is on fuel poverty.
  • A community group/not-for-profit organisation is eligible to apply where most of the staff are volunteers.
  • Applications for retrospective research are not eligible, unless the funding is to be used to write a thoughtful report on previous activity, where the report was not part of the initial funding.
  • General research consultancies cannot apply for funding.

Grant Conditions

If your application is successful, grantees must submit an interim and final report about their results – further details on this will be agreed with the grant recipient prior to the grant being released. The report should focus on the results and findings of the research.

Please note that successful grants will be released in two installments. The second installment will be released upon submission of a satisfactory interim report.

All grant recipients will be asked to host a visit from a Trustee.

The decision of the Trustees is final.
